If your schedule allows flexibility on timing, empty-leg flights to or from Frankfurt can offer a cost-effective option on select routes.
The site of the present airport traces its origins to an earlier facility that opened in 1912. As passenger volumes grew, it became clear the original airport was no longer fit for purpose, and a new airport opened in its place in 1935. The Hindenburg zeppelin departed from Frankfurt on its final voyage to New York City, and during the Berlin Airlift of the late 1940s, Allied aircraft took off from Frankfurt to deliver food and supplies to the isolated city of West Berlin. The airport has operated continuously since 1935, surviving the Second World War and the partition of Germany to become the country’s principal aviation gateway.
Beyond its reputation as Europe’s banking capital, Frankfurt rewards those who take time to look beyond the financial district.
The Römerberg, Frankfurt’s historic old town square, is among the city’s most visited areas. Many of the original buildings, which dated from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, were destroyed during the Second World War and faithfully reconstructed during the 1950s. Close by stand the old and new courthouses (Altes und Neues Rathaus) and the Gothic Church of St. Leonhard, a fourteenth-century structure of considerable architectural distinction.
Frankfurt’s museum district brings together a strong collection of institutions suited to a wide range of interests:
St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is a striking Gothic structure built from red sandstone — a material that sets it apart visually from many of its European counterparts. It served as an Imperial Cathedral from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, during which time elections for the Holy Roman Emperor were held within its walls. It remains one of Frankfurt’s most historically resonant landmarks.
