Dubai and Jebel Ali: The Local Context

Dubai, 37 km from Al Maktoum Airport, is the most populous city in the UAE, home to almost 4 million people and a significant global hub for both passenger movement and freight. It combines a dense concentration of international business operations with a well-established hospitality offer — luxury hotels, high-end restaurants and major retail destinations. Jebel Ali, established in 1977, functions primarily as a commercial and naval port city and is home to the Jebel Ali Desalination Plant, the world’s largest of its kind. Both destinations are readily accessible by car or private car hire from the airport.

A Brief History of Al Maktoum International Airport

Al Maktoum International opened for cargo in June 2010 before welcoming its first passenger services in 2013. It forms the anchor of Dubai South, a 140 km² multiphase development comprising six clustered zones: Dubai Logistics City, Commercial City, Residential City, Aviation City, Golf City and the airport itself. The master plan envisages up to 3 terminals, multiple concourses, executive and royal jet centres, hotels and retail facilities, with an eventual passenger capacity of up to 700 million per year and freight capacity of 12 million tonnes annually. Scheduled completion of the primary construction phase is targeted for 2027, at which point Al Maktoum is planned to become the largest airport in the world.
