A Brief History of Heydar Aliyev International Airport

The airport was established in 1965 and operated for much of its history under the name Bina International Airport, after a suburban district of Baku. In 2004 it was renamed in honour of Heydar Aliyev, the third President of Azerbaijan. A comprehensive modernisation programme in the early 2000s brought the facility to its present standard, adding a second terminal and significantly expanding capacity. The airport now handles in excess of 4 million passengers annually.

Baku: What to Expect on Arrival

Baku is a city of considerable contrasts, where medieval architecture sits alongside striking contemporary design. The UNESCO-listed Old City, known as Icheri Sheher, contains two of Azerbaijan’s most recognised landmarks — the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Beyond the historic quarter, Nizami Street offers high-end retail, whilst the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan provides deeper context for the region’s layered past. The wider metropolitan area is home to more than 5 million people and supports a strong hospitality offering, including internationally recognised hotels, fine dining and a lively cultural calendar.
