A Brief History of Le Bourget Airport

Le Bourget opened in 1919 as Paris’s first commercial airport and remained the city’s sole airport until 1932. It holds an enduring place in aviation history as the landing point for Charles Lindbergh’s solo trans-Atlantic flight from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, in 1927. The airport ceased handling commercial international flights in 1977 and domestic commercial services in 1980, transitioning fully to business aviation. Today it also houses the Musée de l’air et de l’espace (the French Museum of Air and Space) and hosts the Paris Air Show, one of the world’s foremost aerospace events.

What to Do in Paris

Paris rewards every variety of traveller. From the monumental to the intimate, the city’s cultural and historic offer is without equal in Europe. A few highlights worth considering on arrival:

  • The Eiffel Tower — Originally constructed for the 1887 World’s Fair, the tower remains the defining symbol of Paris. Visitors can ascend to the top for views across the city.
  • The Louvre Museum — Home to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and an extraordinary breadth of world-class works spanning antiquity to the nineteenth century.
  • Musée d’Orsay — The foremost collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting in the world, including major works by Monet and Van Gogh.
  • Basilica of Saint-Denis — Widely regarded as the first cathedral built in the Gothic style, the basilica features remarkable stained-glass windows and serves as the burial site of the kings of France.
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral — One of the most iconic buildings in France, currently undergoing restoration following the 2019 fire, yet still profoundly impressive.
  • Palace of Versailles — A short distance north of Paris, the palace and its gardens offer an immersive encounter with the grandeur of the French ancien régime.
