Beirut is the capital of Lebanon, the third-largest city in the Levant region and the fifteenth-largest in the Arab world. Home to more than 2 million people, it is a multicultural city with prominent Muslim and Christian communities, a long-established role as a regional business centre and a reputation as one of the most vibrant leisure destinations in the Middle East — earning its enduring sobriquet, the “Paris of the East.”
A settlement with a history stretching back 5,000 years, Beirut rewards visitors with a distinctive mix of ancient heritage and contemporary city life. Notable landmarks and attractions include:
Beirut International Airport was established in 1954, making it one of the oldest air travel facilities in the Middle East. It bears the name of Rafic Baha El Deen Al Hariri, the Lebanese businessman and Prime Minister of Lebanon from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 until his resignation on 20 October 2004. The airport sustained considerable damage during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) and has since undergone substantial reconstruction and modernisation, expanding to its current three-runway configuration with a passenger terminal designed for a capacity of 6 million passengers — a figure its annual throughput of over 8 million has long surpassed. BEY was also the first airport in the region to offer 5G wireless internet services, available free of charge for 2 hours.
