A Brief History of King Fahd International Airport

The airport was first conceived in 1976 as a military installation; construction began seven years later and continued for over two decades before the facility opened to civilian traffic in 1999. During the Gulf War in 1991, its military infrastructure served as a landing base for Allied forces. Named in honour of King Fahd, who ruled Saudi Arabia from 1982 until his death in 2005, the airport today holds a Guinness World Record as the largest airport in the world by occupied land area, covering 780 square kilometres. Its six-storey terminal processes close to 10 million passengers annually and includes a Royal Terminal reserved exclusively for the Saudi Royal Family, a mosque accommodating over 2,000 worshippers, and a 250-room Hilton Hotel. The airport also records the shortest domestic flight in the country — Dammam to Bahrain at 40 minutes — as well as the longest, between Dammam and Tabuk at 2 hours and 10 minutes.
