A Brief History of the Airport

Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport was established by the Israeli Air Force in 1968, when the Sinai Peninsula remained under Israeli control. Following the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty in 1979 and the subsequent Israeli withdrawal, Egyptian authorities converted it to civilian use. A significant modernisation programme in the early 2000s brought the facility to its current configuration of two terminals and two asphalt runways. Passenger numbers fell sharply between 2015 and 2019 in the wake of the downing of Metrojet Flight 9268 on 31 October 2015; since then, the airport has substantially strengthened its security measures and major international carriers have resumed regular operations.
